Buyer's Guide: Sizing Your Protection

Proper fit is more important than bulk. Gear that fits securely protects better than loose gear.

1. Shin Guards (The 90% Rule)

Most sizing mistakes happen here. Measure from the center of the kneecap to the top of your skate boot. If you tuck your tongue under the shin guard, add 1 inch.

2. Pants vs. Girdles

Traditional Pants: One-piece units with loose legs. Classic fit.
Girdle + Shell: A tight compression layer with pads (Girdle) worn under a lightweight nylon cover (Shell). This offers a more custom, anatomical fit and is preferred by many pro players.

3. Shoulder Pads

Measure the circumference of your chest (armpit to armpit). Warning: "Big" shoulder pads don't mean better protection. Modern pads are low-profile to allow for full range of motion while shooting.

Pro Tip: Elbow pads should meet the cuff of your glove and the bicep guard of your shoulder pads. If there is a gap, you are exposed to slashes.

Common Questions

Do I need "Pro Stock" gear?
Retail top-tier gear (Bauer Supreme Mach, CCM Tacks XF) is excellent. Pro stock gear is often reinforced, but harder to size perfectly. For most players, high-end retail gear offers the best balance of weight and protection.
When should I replace my gear?
Shin Guards: When the inner foam flattens out or the plastic cracks.
Elbow Pads: When the elastic straps lose their stretch. Loose elbow pads slide down and leave you unprotected.
