Buyer's Guide: Secure Fit

Loose elbow pads are dangerous. If they slide down, your elbow is exposed to the ice. If they slide up, your forearm is exposed to slashes.

1. Sizing by Height

Elbow pads are generally sized based on the player's height.

  • Youth (S/M/L): Height 3'3" - 4'6"
  • Junior (S/M/L): Height 4'4" - 5'4"
  • Senior (S/M/L): Height 5'5" - 6'0"+

2. 2-Piece vs. 3-Piece Design

2-Piece: The bicep guard is attached directly to the forearm guard. Simpler, cheaper, but slightly less mobile.

3-Piece (AMP / ASD): The elbow cap floats independently between the bicep and forearm guards. This allows for full arm extension without the pad moving out of place. Highly recommended for travel players.

The "No-Gap" Rule: Put on your elbow pads and your gloves. There should be NO exposed skin between the cuff of the glove and the bottom of the elbow pad. If there is a gap, you are asking for a forearm bruise.

Common Questions

Soft Cap vs. Hard Cap?
Almost all modern elbow pads use a Hard Plastic Cap covered by foam. Soft caps are rare and not recommended for competitive play as they don't disperse impact energy as well on ice falls.
Why do the straps stretch out?
Sweat and constant pulling destroy elastic over time. If your straps are "bacon-y" and loose, you can try taping them, but it's usually safer to replace the pads to ensure they stay locked on the elbow cap.
