Buyer's Guide: Choosing Your Irons
Irons are the engines of your scoring. Choosing the right set comes down to your handicap and your swing speed.
1. Cavity Back (Game Improvement)
Best for 90% of golfers. These irons have a hollowed-out back which moves the weight to the perimeter. This makes the "sweet spot" huge, so even off-center hits still fly straight and high.
2. Blades / Muscle Back (Players)
Best for Low Handicappers. These have a smaller head and offer maximum feedback. If you want to "work the ball" (hit draws and fades on command), this is what you play. But be warned: they are not forgiving.
Shaft Guide: Use Steel Shafts for accuracy (if you have a standard/fast swing). Use Graphite Shafts for distance (if you have a slower swing or joint pain).
Common Questions
What is included in a set?
Most modern sets are 5-PW (5-iron through Pitching Wedge). The 3 and 4 irons have largely been replaced by Hybrids, which are easier to hit.
Why is turf testing important?
Hitting off a store mat masks bad contact because the club bounces. Hitting off real grass reveals the truth. That is why the Alpha Ultra 30-Day Trial is the smartest way to buy irons.
