Buyer's Guide: Protection Essentials

Softball moves fast. Proper gear keeps you safe on defense and aggressive on offense.

1. Fielding Masks (Face Guards)

Mandatory for many pitchers and infielders (especially 1st and 3rd base). These lightweight steel or alloy masks protect your teeth and nose from bad hops without blocking your vision. Look for "Ponytail Friendly" straps for the best fit.

2. Batter's Leg Guards

Foul balls off the shin hurt. A leg guard gives you the confidence to stay closed on the ball. Sizing is based on shin length:

  • Under 12": Youth
  • 12" - 15": Intermediate
  • Over 15": Adult

3. Batter's Elbow Guards

If you want to own the inside part of the plate, you need protection. Custom-mold guards (like EvoShield) start soft and harden to your arm shape for a perfect, low-profile fit.

Important for Custom Mold Gear: Products like EvoShield come in an airtight foil bag. DO NOT open the bag until you are ready to fit the guard. Once air hits the gel, it begins to harden permanently.

Common Questions

Do I really need a fielding mask?
The ball leaves the bat at over 70mph in youth softball. At 43 feet away (pitching distance) or 60 feet (corners), reaction time is minimal. A mask is the cheapest insurance policy for your smile.
Which hand do I wear the Sliding Mitt on?
It is worn on the hand you lead with when sliding. If you slide head-first, wear it on the hand you reach for the bag with. Most players keep it in their back pocket while batting.
Leg Guard: Left or Right?
Leg guards are specific to your batting stance. If you bat Right Handed, you need a guard for your Left Leg (the leg facing the pitcher). If you bat Lefty, you need a Right Leg guard.
