Buyer's Guide: Measuring the Leg

Shin guard sizing depends on how you wear your skates. This is the most common mistake parents make.

1. The Measurement

Sit in a chair with your foot flat on the ground. Measure from the Center of the Kneecap to the Top of your Skate Boot (roughly where the ankle bends).

2. Over vs. Under?

Over the Tongue: You wear the shin guard over the skate tongue (flopping out).
Use exact measurement (e.g., if you measure 15", buy size 15).

Under the Tongue: You tuck the shin guard inside the skate tongue.
Add 1 Inch (e.g., if you measure 15", buy size 16). You need the extra length because the pad sits higher on the leg to clear the skate boot.

3. Sizing Chart (Approximate)

  • Youth (8" - 10"): Ages 4-8 (Height 3'4" - 4'4")
  • Junior (11" - 13"): Ages 9-13 (Height 4'4" - 5'4")
  • Senior (14" - 17"): Ages 14+ (Height 5'5" - 6'4"+)
Fit Check: When standing straight, the knee cap should be centered directly on your knee. If it's too high, your lower thigh is exposed. If it's too low, the pad will dig into your skate and restrict bending.

Common Questions

Do I need shin tape?
Most players use Clear Shin Tape to secure the pad to their leg so it doesn't twist during a fall. Modern pads have straps, but tape provides that extra "locked-in" feel.
What is "molded" plastic?
Higher-end pads use injected molded plastic that is anatomically shaped to wrap around the leg (Calf Guards). Cheaper pads just have flat foam on the back of the leg, leaving you exposed to slashes from behind.
