Buyer's Guide: Sizing for Kids

Correctly sized shin guards are essential. If they are too long, they will push the skate off the ice. If they are too short, the knee is exposed.

1. Sizing by Height

Measure from the center of the kneecap to the top of the skate boot.

  • Youth (8"-10"): Ages 4-8. Height 3'4" - 4'4"
  • Junior (11"-13"): Ages 9-13. Height 4'4" - 5'4"

2. The "Strap Check"

Kids have skinny calves. Make sure the straps can be tightened enough to secure the pad so it doesn't spin around. If the velcro overlaps too much and doesn't stick, you need to use clear shin tape to hold it in place.

3. Left vs. Right?

Most youth shin guards are universal (symmetrical) and can be worn on either leg. Junior and Senior guards are often anatomical (Left/Right specific). Check the tag inside the pad.

Pro Tip: Always have your child put their skates on when checking the fit. The bottom of the shin guard should sit just on top of the skate tongue (or inside it) without lifting the pad up when they flex their knees.

Common Questions

Do they go under the socks?
Yes. Shin guards are worn directly on the leg (over a thin base layer) and then covered by the team's hockey socks.
How often do I replace them?
Replace them when the inner foam is flattened out or if the plastic shell cracks. Broken plastic is sharp and dangerous to other players.
