Buyer's Guide: Safety First

A helmet is the most important piece of equipment in your bag. Here is how to make sure it's safe.

1. The "Shake Test" (Fit)

Most modern helmets (Bauer Re-Akt, CCM Tacks) have tool-free adjustment. Open the flaps, put the helmet on, and close the flaps until it is snug. Shake your head side-to-side. If the helmet moves independently of your head, it is too loose.

2. Expiration Dates

Did you know hockey helmets expire? Look for the HECC sticker on the back. It will have an expiration date (usually 6.5 years from manufacture). If your helmet is expired, it is illegal for play in USA Hockey and the plastic may be brittle.

3. Combo vs. Helmet Only

Combo: Includes the face cage. Mandatory for all youth players (under 18). This is the best value.

Helmet Only: Allows you to attach a visor (half-shield) or a different brand of cage. Popular with adult league players.

Safety Note: Never buy a used helmet. You do not know if it has sustained a major impact or hairline crack that compromises its structure.

Common Questions

Do sizes run true?
Generally, yes. Adjustable helmets cover a wide range. Small fits most kids ages 6-10. Medium fits ages 11-Adult. Large is for head circumferences over 23.5 inches.
Can I put a Bauer cage on a CCM helmet?
Yes, usually. Cages are standardized, so a Bauer cage will fit a CCM helmet and vice-versa, provided they are roughly the same size (e.g., Medium Cage on Medium Helmet).
What is MIPS / Rotational Protection?
Premium helmets feature suspended liners (like MIPS or fluid pods) that allow the helmet to rotate slightly during impact, reducing the rotational force transferred to the brain.
