Buyer's Guide: Finding the Perfect Fit

Skates are the most important piece of equipment you will buy. If they hurt, you can't play.

1. Hockey Skate Sizing (The "1.5 Rule")

Hockey skates do NOT fit like sneakers. Generally, you want a skate that is 1.5 sizes smaller than your US shoe size.

  • US Shoe Size 10: Skate Size 8.5
  • US Shoe Size 6: Skate Size 4.5
  • Youth: Usually closer to true-to-size or 1 size down.

2. Fit Families (Bauer & CCM)

Agility (Vapor / Jetspeed): Tapered fit. Narrow heel, shallow instep. Designed for quick starts and tight turns.

Power (Supreme / Tacks): Anatomical fit. Wraps closer to the foot. Designed for explosive, long strides.

Fit 1, 2, 3: Newer Bauer skates use a "3D Fit" system. Fit 1 (Narrow/Low Volume), Fit 2 (Regular), Fit 3 (Wide/High Volume).

3. Baking Your Skates

Most mid-to-high-end skates are "thermoformable." You heat them in a skate oven, put them on, and the materials mold to the exact shape of your ankle bones. This eliminates the painful break-in period.

Pro Tip: Do not bake low-end (recreational) skates. They are made of materials that will break down if heated. Check the box to see if they are "Thermoformable."

Common Questions

Do skates come sharpened?
No. New skates have no edge (flat steel). You must get them sharpened before you step on the ice, or you will fall immediately.
What is "profiling"?
Sharpening puts an edge on the blade (hollow). Profiling changes the actual shape (rocker) of the blade steel (e.g., 9-foot radius vs. 13-foot radius) to adjust your balance and agility.
