Buyer's Guide: Sizing Kids' Skates

Buying skates for growing feet is tricky. You want them to last, but if they are too big, your child's ankles will wobble, and they won't be able to skate.

1. The "1 Size Down" Rule

Start by taking their current sneaker size and subtracting 1 size.

  • Shoe Size 12 (Toddler) → Skate Size Y11
  • Shoe Size 3 (Grade School) → Skate Size 2

2. Youth vs. Junior

Youth (Sizes Y6 - Y13.5): For ages 4-8. These skates are softer and often have velcro straps to make it easier for parents to put them on.
Junior (Sizes 1 - 3.5): For ages 8-12. These look like mini versions of adult skates. They have reinforced ankles to support faster skating and harder stops.

3. Width (Regular vs. Wide)

Most kids fit in a standard Regular (D) width. If your child complains that their feet hurt on the sides immediately after putting the skate on, look for a Wide (EE) model.

The "Finger Test": Have your child put the skate on and push their foot all the way forward until their toes brush the front cap. You should be able to slide one finger behind their heel. If you can slide two fingers, the skate is too big and unsafe.

Common Questions

Do I need to sharpen them?
YES. New skates come with flat steel. You must get them sharpened before the first use. For kids (under 80 lbs), ask for a "1/2 inch" hollow, which gives them good grip on the ice.
Should I buy adjustable skates?
Adjustable skates are great for recreational pond skating, but if your child is playing on a hockey team, we recommend fixed-size skates. They provide better ankle support and energy transfer for stopping and turning.
