Buyer's Guide: Senior Skate Sizing

Do not buy your shoe size. Hockey skates are sized differently to ensure a locked-in heel for maximum energy transfer.

1. The "1.5" Rule

For most brands (Bauer, CCM, True), you should calculate your skate size by subtracting 1.5 from your US Shoe Size.

  • US Shoe 9.5 → Skate Size 8
  • US Shoe 11 → Skate Size 9.5
  • US Shoe 12+ → Skate Size 10.5 - 11

2. Width & Fit Systems

Modern skates now come in 3-dimensional fits to accommodate wide or narrow feet.

  • Fit 1 (Low Volume): Narrow foot, low instep. (Formerly Vapor D-width).
  • Fit 2 (Medium Volume): Standard width, average heel depth. (Formerly Supreme D/EE).
  • Fit 3 (High Volume): Wide foot, deep heel, high instep. (Formerly Nexus).

3. Stiffness Matters

Elite Skates: Very stiff carbon composite. Incredible power transfer, but requires a "break-in" period (baking is mandatory).
Recreational Skates: Softer boot. More comfortable out of the box, but offers less ankle support for aggressive skating.

The "Pencil Test": Unlace the skate and pull the tongue forward. Place a pencil across the eyelets (3rd or 4th down). If the pencil touches your foot (instep) without touching the eyelets, the skate is too shallow (low volume) and will cause lace bite.

Common Questions

Can I bake these at home?
Technically yes, but we do not recommend it. Home ovens have fluctuating temperatures that can melt the glue or crack the composite. It is always safer to take them to a pro shop with a specialized skate oven.
What is "Intermediate" sizing?
Intermediate skates (Sizes 4.0 - 6.5) are technically for teens, but many adults with smaller feet wear them. They offer the same high-end tech as Senior skates but are slightly cheaper and have a slightly softer flex profile.
