Buyer's Guide: The Equipment Checklist
Hockey requires more gear than any other sport. Use this checklist to make sure you have everything before you step on the ice.
1. The Essentials
- Skates: The most important item. Must fit tight (1-1.5 sizes down from shoe size).
- Helmet: Must be HECC certified. Buy new, never used (safety expires).
- Stick: Correct height (chin on skates) and flex (half body weight).
2. Protective Pads
- Gloves: Protects hands and wrists. Should fit snug but allow finger movement.
- Shin Guards: Worn under socks. Must cover the kneecap down to the skate.
- Elbow Pads: Protects the funny bone during falls.
- Shoulder Pads: Protects chest and spine. Essential for checking leagues.
- Pants/Breezers: Padded shorts that protect the hips, tailbone, and thighs.
3. Undergarments & Accessories
Don't forget the Jock/Jill (Pelvic Protection), Neck Guard (Mandatory in many leagues), Mouthguard, and Hockey Socks to cover your shin guards.
Fit Check: When trying on gear, always simulate hockey movements. Bend your knees, cross your arms, and look up. If the pads restrict your movement or leave large gaps of skin exposed, the fit is wrong.
Common Questions
What is "Pro Stock" gear?
Pro Stock equipment was originally made for professional players (NHL/AHL) but wasn't used. It is often higher quality and more durable than retail gear, but it may not come with a warranty.
How do I wash my gear?
Most base layers, elbow pads, shins (liners), and gloves can be washed in a machine on a gentle cycle and air-dried. Never put helmets or skates in the washing machine. Spray them with disinfectant and air dry.
