Choosing Your Role: Outfield vs. First Base
Being a lefty is a huge advantage at both First Base and Outfield. Here is how to choose the right glove for your specific job.
1. The Outfield Glove (12.75" – 13.00")
Designed for tracking fly balls. These gloves feature deep pockets (often Trap-Eze or H-Web) that secure the ball on contact. They are lighter than First Base mitts to allow for full-speed running.
2. The First Base Mitt (13.00")
Designed for digging throws. A First Base mitt has no individual fingers and a stiff, curved edge. This "shovel" shape is essential for scooping low throws out of the dirt—something an outfield glove struggles to do consistently.
Pro Tip: If you play both positions, we recommend owning one of each. However, if you can only buy one, a 13" Outfield Glove is the most versatile choice, as it is legal at First Base (though not optimal for scooping). A First Base mitt is NOT legal in the outfield.
Common Questions
Why are lefty First Base mitts so popular?
Physics! A lefty First Baseman glove hand is naturally positioned towards the field when holding a runner on base. This allows for faster tags and easier throws to second base on a double play.
Is a 13" First Base mitt too big for 12U?
It can be heavy, but 13" is the standard. For younger players, look for brands like Resilient SFBL or Rawlings that offer lighter-weight leather options to help them control the mitt.
