If you are a slap hitter or a contact hitter, you rely on your hands to manipulate the barrel. Long cuffs can feel restrictive. Standard cuffs sit right at the wrist bone, allowing for 100% range of motion.

Less material means less bulk. Standard cuff gloves feel lighter on the hands, which helps increase hand speed through the zone.
Fit Check: A standard cuff should end right where your hand meets your wrist. If it covers your wrist bone entirely, you might be wearing a size too big.

Is there less protection?

Yes. Fastpitch sizes are smaller than baseball sizes. If you are switching from a youth baseball glove, you will likely need the same size (e.g., Youth Medium) in a fastpitch glove, but the fit will be tighter in the fingers.
