Buyer's Guide: Maximum Velocity

Mid Kick sticks are designed to load energy like a bow and arrow. The harder you lean on them, the harder they shoot.

1. The Mechanics

Unlike a Low Kick stick that snaps quickly, a Mid Kick stick flexes in the center of the shaft. This longer flex zone stores more potential energy. When it releases, it acts like a slingshot, delivering maximum puck speed.

2. Best For...

Power Shooters: If you love taking slapshots from the point or heavy one-timers from the circle, you need a Mid Kick stick.
Grinders: Mid Kick sticks usually feel more solid/stable in board battles and faceoffs compared to whippy low-kick sticks.

3. Senior Flex Ratings

  • 70 - 77 Flex: Great for players who want power but don't have massive upper body mass (160-175 lbs).
  • 85 - 87 Flex: The "Gold Standard" for adult male players. Stiff enough for slapshots but flexible enough for wrist shots.
  • 95 - 100+ Flex: For the heavy hitters (200 lbs+). Think Zdeno Chara. Hard to flex, but deadly if you can load it.
Hybrid Kick? Models like the Bauer Nexus use a "Hybrid" kick point. They offer the power of a Mid Kick but are easier to load than traditional stiff sticks. This is the most versatile option for the average beer league player.

Common Questions

Can I use this for wrist shots?
Yes, but it requires different technique. You need to lean your weight into the stick to get it to flex. A Low Kick stick does the work for you; a Mid Kick stick requires you to do the work.
Should defensemen use Mid Kick?
Traditionally, yes. Defensemen usually take longer shots (from the blue line) and need the stick to generate power over distance. They also benefit from the stiffer lower shaft when battling in corners.
