Buyer's Guide: The Quick Release
Low Kick sticks are built for one thing: getting the puck off the blade before the goalie can react.
1. The Mechanics
The stick is stiff at the top and flexible at the bottom (the taper). When you push down, the bottom of the shaft loads instantly. As soon as you release pressure, it snaps back. This creates that "pop" sensation on wrist shots and snapshots.
2. Best For...
Forwards in Tight: If you find yourself shooting from the hash marks or slot, this is your stick.
Playmakers: The low kick point also helps with crisp, hard passing.
3. Senior Flex Ratings
- 65 - 70 Flex: Whippy. Great for lighter players (under 160lbs) or those who want maximum load with minimal effort.
- 75 - 77 Flex: The most popular standard. Good balance of power and whip.
- 85 - 87 Flex: Stiffer. Better for stronger players (180lbs+) or those who take harder slapshots.
Pro Tip: Most Low Kick sticks (like Vapor or Ribcor) pair excellently with a Toe Curve (P28/P92). This combo allows you to pull the puck in and snap it over the goalie's shoulder in one motion.
Common Questions
Can I take slapshots with a Low Kick stick?
Yes, but it won't feel as powerful as a Mid Kick stick. A Low Kick stick doesn't store as much total energy because the flex zone is smaller. It's designed for speed, not raw MPH.
Do they break easier?
Modern sticks (Hyperlite 2, Trigger 8) are reinforced at the taper, but generally, the lower shaft is the high-stress zone. Avoid taking heavy slashes near the bottom of the stick.
