Buyer's Guide: Understanding the Reformer

A Pilates reformer is a precision instrument. Unlike standard gym equipment, it uses spring tension to create progressive resistance that lengthens muscle while strengthening it.

1. The Spring System

This is the heart of the machine.
Weights vs. Springs: Weights provide constant resistance (10lbs is always 10lbs). Springs provide progressive resistance—it gets harder the further you stretch. This is why Pilates is so effective for rehabilitation and deep core toning.

2. Height: Studio vs. Low Profile

Studio Height (14"+): Easier to get on and off, especially for older clients or those with injuries. This is the standard for commercial spaces.
Low Profile/Home: Sits closer to the ground. Great for rooms with lower ceilings or for easy storage, but requires more mobility to get down onto the carriage.

3. The "Tower" Upgrade

Some reformers (like the Peak PilateSystem) come with a vertical Tower attached. This adds a Push-Through Bar and Roll-Down Bar, essentially turning your reformer into a Cadillac/Wall Unit. It doubles the number of exercises you can perform.

Space Planning: Reformers are long (usually 7-8 feet). Ensure you have at least 2 feet of clearance on all sides for arm and leg movements. If you have tight space, look for a model that can stand upright for storage.

Common Questions

Is it hard to assemble?
Yes. Reformers are complex machines with rails, carriages, and tension systems. We highly recommend professional installation to ensure the carriage glides perfectly smoothly.
Does it come with the box?
Most premium models (like the casa™ and fit™) include the Long/Short Box. This is a crucial accessory for seated and prone exercises. Check the product description to be sure.
