Buyer's Guide: Speed vs. Power
In Travel Ball, pitchers throw harder at younger ages. The most common mistake parents make is buying a bat that is too heavy (Drop -8) for a 9 or 10-year-old.
1. Why -10 is the Sweet Spot
A Drop -10 is the standard for ages 7-10. It allows the player to control the barrel and stay "inside" the ball. If the bat is too heavy, the barrel drops (bat drag), resulting in lazy fly balls to right field.
2. When to use -12?
A Drop -12 is incredibly light. This is for the smaller player (ages 7-8) or the player facing elite velocity. The lighter weight allows for lightning-fast reaction times.
Trybe-It Strategy: Not sure? Use your membership to demo a -10 and a -12. See which one produces cleaner contact in the cage. Keep the winner, return the loser.
Common Questions
Can I use this in Little League?
NO. USSSA bats are "hotter" than USA bats. They are illegal in Little League, Cal Ripken, and Dixie Youth. They are for Travel Ball and Tournament play only.
What is "Coach Pitch" sizing?
Coach Pitch bats (Junior Big Barrel) are usually -12. They are meant for speeds under 40mph. If you are playing "Kid Pitch" travel ball (9U+), ensure you buy a standard Senior League USSSA bat, not a Junior Big Barrel.
