Parent's Guide: The "Do-It-All" Stick

If you aren't sure what kind of player your child is yet (sniper vs. playmaker), a Mid Kick stick is the safest bet.

1. Versatility

A Mid Kick stick (like the Bauer Nexus) flexes in the middle. This makes it great for everything:
Passing: It feels stable when catching hard passes.
Shooting: It provides good power for slapshots but is still quick enough for wrist shots.

2. Who is it for?

Defensemen: Great for kids who play the point and need to get the puck to the net through traffic.
Stronger Players: If your child is bigger for their age, they can bend a Mid Kick stick effectively to generate serious power.

3. Choosing the Flex

Stick to the "Half Body Weight" rule. A Mid Kick stick can feel slightly stiffer than a Low Kick stick, so don't go too high on the flex.

  • Youth (20-30 Flex): For players under 60 lbs.
  • Junior (40-50 Flex): For players 60-100 lbs.
Pro Tip: If your child is struggling to raise the puck, check if they are cutting their stick too short. A shorter stick is stiffer and much harder to load.

Common Questions

Is this stick good for beginners?
Yes. Many "Hybrid" Mid Kick sticks (like the Bauer Nexus E3, E4, E5) are designed specifically to be forgiving. They help kids learn the feeling of the stick flexing without requiring perfect technique.
What curve should I get?
The P92 (Bauer) or P29 (CCM) is the standard. It has a mid-toe curve that is open enough to help lift the puck but flat enough to help with backhands and passing.
