Parent's Guide: Choosing the Right Stick

A Low Kick stick is usually the best choice for developing players. Here is why.

1. Why Low Kick for Kids?

Young players often lack the upper body strength to "bend" a stiff hockey stick.
A Low Kick stick is designed to flex at the very bottom. This means the child doesn't need to lean their whole body weight into the stick to get it to work. It helps them learn how to lift the puck (saucer passes & roofing it) much faster.

2. The Flex Rule (Rule of Half)

The flex rating should be roughly half your child's body weight.

  • Weight 40-60 lbs: 20 - 30 Flex (Youth)
  • Weight 60-80 lbs: 35 - 40 Flex (Junior)
  • Weight 80-100 lbs: 50 - 55 Flex (Junior)

3. Warning: Cutting the Stick

If you buy a stick that is too long and cut 4 inches off the top, you make the stick much stiffer.
Example: A 40 Flex stick cut down by 3 inches becomes a 50 Flex stick. This might make it too hard for your child to use. Try to buy a stick that is close to the correct height (nose height on skates) right off the rack.

Pro Tip: Look for the P29 or P92 Curve. It is the best all-around blade shape for learning how to stickhandle and shoot. Avoid flat blades or crazy hooks.

Common Questions

How tall should the stick be?
On skates, the stick should touch the player's chin. If they are in street shoes, it should touch their nose.
Grip vs. Non-Grip?
Almost all modern composite sticks come with Grip (a tacky texture on the shaft). This is highly recommended as it prevents the stick from twisting in their small hands when the puck hits the blade.
