Buyer's Guide: Sizing for Kids

Finding the right size pants is about finding the sweet spot between "too restrictive" and "swimming in gear."

1. Waist Measurement (The Key)

Hockey pants should fit snugly around the natural waist (above the hips). Measure the circumference of their waist in inches.

  • Youth Small (Ages 3-5): Waist 20" - 21"
  • Youth Large (Ages 7-9): Waist 22" - 23"
  • Junior Small (Ages 9-11): Waist 23" - 25"
  • Junior Large (Ages 11-13): Waist 27" - 29"

2. The Length Test

Have your child kneel on the floor. The bottom of the pant leg should lightly touch the floor. If it bunches up, they are too long. If it's 2 inches off the ground, they are too short and their knees will be exposed.

3. The "Growth Zipper"

Look for Bauer and CCM models with a +1 Extension. This is a zipper hidden around the waist. When your child hits a growth spurt, you unzip it, and the pants instantly become 1 inch longer. This is a lifesaver for parents.

Pro Tip: Most youth pants come with an internal belt, but skinny kids often need suspenders to keep the pants from falling down. Check if the pants have suspender buttons before buying!

Common Questions

Youth vs. Junior: What's the difference?
Youth sizes (ages 4-8) are boxier and simpler, designed for kids just learning to stand up. Junior sizes (ages 9-13) are more anatomical and have harder plastic inserts because the pucks are moving faster.
My child is tall and skinny. What fits best?
Try the Bauer Vapor or CCM Jetspeed lines. They feature a tapered fit—snug at the waist but wider at the legs—which is perfect for tall, thin players.
