Buyer's Guide: Choosing Your Bag

A hockey bag takes a beating. It gets dragged across asphalt, tossed into trunks, and stuffed with sweaty gear. Here is how to pick the right one.

1. Wheeled vs. Carry Bags

Wheeled Bags: Best for younger players (who can't carry the weight) and goalies. Look for "All-Terrain" wheels that can handle snow and gravel.

Carry Bags: Preferred by older players (High School/Adult). They are lighter, fit into trunks easier, and don't have hard frames that can break.

2. Sizing

  • Youth (26" - 30"): Fits gear for ages 4-8.
  • Junior (32" - 34"): Fits gear for ages 9-13.
  • Senior (36" - 40"): Fits full adult gear. If you have extra bulky pants or large shin guards, go for the 40".

3. The "Grit" Tower

Tower bags (like the Grit HTSE) stand upright and have shelves for every piece of gear. They are fantastic for organization and air-drying, but they are bulky and hard to fit in small cars.

Ventilation Tip: Look for bags with mesh panels or grommets. Airflow is the only way to prevent your gear from growing mold and developing the dreaded "Hockey Smell."

Common Questions

Can I wash my hockey bag?
Soft carry bags (canvas) can often be washed in a large commercial machine on cold/gentle. Never wash a wheeled bag or a bag with a hard bottom; spot clean those with mild soap and water.
Do I need a separate stick bag?
For local travel, no. Players usually carry their sticks. Stick bags are only necessary if you are flying or traveling on a bus where sticks might get scratched or lost.
