Buyer's Guide: Functional Strength

Free weights are the most versatile tools in the gym. A single kettlebell can work every muscle in your body.

1. Kettlebells

A cannonball with a handle.
Best For: Dynamic, explosive movements (swings, snatches). The off-center center of gravity forces your stabilizer muscles to work harder than with a dumbbell.

2. Benches

The unsung hero of the gym.
Flat Bench: Great for bench press basics. Solid and stable.
Adjustable (FID) Bench: Can go Flat, Incline, or Decline. Highly recommended for home gyms as it allows you to hit different angles (Incline Press, Seated Shoulder Press).

3. Sleds

The ultimate conditioning tool.
Push/Pull: Great for knees (concentric only movement) and safe for high-intensity cardio. Zero impact on the joints.

Safety Tip: When using heavy free weights at home, ensure you have proper flooring (rubber mats). Dropping a 50lb kettlebell on concrete will crack the concrete (and the kettlebell).

Common Questions

What weight should I start with?
For Kettlebells: Men typically start with 35lbs (16kg). Women typically start with 18lbs (8kg) or 26lbs (12kg).
Do I need a rack?
If you own more than 3 kettlebells or a barbell set, a storage rack is highly recommended to keep your floor clear and prevent tripping hazards.
