Buyer's Guide: Choosing Your Setup

Matching the rod to the technique is the secret to catching more fish.

1. Spinning Gear

The reel hangs under the rod.
Best For: Finesse techniques (Drop Shot, Ned Rig) and lighter lures. It is easier to cast into the wind and rarely backlashes.

2. Baitcasting Gear

The reel sits on top of the rod.
Best For: Power fishing (Frogs, Jigs, Crankbaits) and heavy cover. It provides more torque to winch big bass out of the weeds.

3. Power vs. Action

Power: How much weight it takes to bend the rod (Medium, Heavy). Use Heavy for frogs; Medium for crankbaits.
Action: Where the rod bends (Fast, Slow). A "Fast" tip bends only at the top (great for sensitivity). A "Slow" tip bends deep into the blank (great for keeping treble hooks pinned).

Drag Setting: Before your first cast, tighten your drag until you can barely pull line out with your hand. If it's too loose, you'll miss the hookset. If it's too tight, a big fish will snap your line.

Common Questions

Left or Right Hand Retrieve?
If you are right-handed, most anglers prefer to cast with their right hand and reel with their Left Hand (spinning). For baitcasters, it is personal preference.
What is a "Combo"?
A combo means the Rod and Reel are sold together. They are pre-matched by the factory for perfect balance, taking the guesswork out of buying.
