Buyer's Guide: Choosing Your Setup
Matching the rod to the technique is the secret to catching more fish.
1. Spinning Gear
The reel hangs under the rod.
→ Best For: Finesse techniques (Drop Shot, Ned Rig) and lighter lures. It is easier to cast into the wind and rarely backlashes.
2. Baitcasting Gear
The reel sits on top of the rod.
→ Best For: Power fishing (Frogs, Jigs, Crankbaits) and heavy cover. It provides more torque to winch big bass out of the weeds.
3. Power vs. Action
Power: How much weight it takes to bend the rod (Medium, Heavy). Use Heavy for frogs; Medium for crankbaits.
Action: Where the rod bends (Fast, Slow). A "Fast" tip bends only at the top (great for sensitivity). A "Slow" tip bends deep into the blank (great for keeping treble hooks pinned).
