Field Hockey Stick Rental FAQs

What size field hockey stick do I need?
The most common method is the "Hip Bone" rule. Stand the stick on the ground next to the player. The top of the stick should reach their hip bone. If it reaches the belly button, it is too long (though some beginners prefer this for stopping the ball).
Can I rent indoor and outdoor sticks?
Yes. Check the product title carefully. Outdoor sticks are thicker and heavier. Indoor sticks are thinner and lighter for fast, flat surfaces. Do not use an indoor stick on grass (it will break!), and don't use an outdoor stick on a court.
Are these wood or composite sticks?
We primarily rent Composite (Fiberglass/Carbon) sticks. Unlike cheap wood sticks found in starter kits, composite sticks offer more power (hitting distance) and less vibration, making the game more fun for beginners.
What if my daughter quits mid-season?
This is why you rent! If she stops playing, simply return the stick to Gear Trybe. You aren't stuck with a piece of equipment you can't use.

Getting the right size is critical for developing good stick skills. A stick that is too long will hit the player in the stomach; one that is too short will cause back pain.

General Height vs. Stick Length Chart

  • Height 4'3" - 4'7": Size 32"
  • Height 4'7" - 5'0": Size 34"
  • Height 5'1" - 5'3": Size 35"
  • Height 5'4" + : Size 36.5" (Standard Adult Length)

Pro Tip: When in doubt, go slightly shorter rather than longer for better ball control. Renting allows you to try a 34" and swap to a 35" if she hits a growth spurt.
