Buyer's Guide: Why go lighter?

Many parents buy a bat that is too heavy, thinking their kid will "grow into it." This destroys their swing mechanics. Watch why speed wins:

1. Mechanics First

A -11, -12, or -13 drop weight is incredibly light. This allows a young player (ages 6-9) to keep the barrel up and swing level. If the bat is too heavy, the barrel drops, resulting in pop-ups and weak grounders.

2. Physics (Force = Mass x Acceleration)

At this age, players don't have the muscle mass to swing a heavy bat fast. By reducing the mass (the bat weight), we increase the acceleration (swing speed). This results in harder contact and more distance.

The Strength Test: Have your player hold the bat straight out to the side with one arm for 10 seconds. If the barrel starts to drop or their arm shakes, the bat is too heavy.

Common Questions

What ages are these for?
Typically ages 6 to 9. Once a player reaches age 10 or 11, they usually have the strength to graduate to a Drop -10 or -8 bat.
Is -13 too light?
Only if the player is exceptionally strong for their age. For most 7-year-olds, a -13 bat is a superpower. It allows them to catch up to faster pitching.
