Buyer's Guide: The Transition to Power

As players get stronger (Ages 10-12), swinging a super-light bat actually hurts their performance. Watch how to level up:

1. Drop -10 (The Standard)

This is the most common weight for ages 9-11. It offers a perfect balance of speed and barrel mass.

2. Drop -8 & -5 (The Prep)

If your player is 11 or 12 years old, you should strongly consider moving to a -8 or -5. Why? Because in High School, they MUST swing a -3 (BBCOR). Jumping from a -10 straight to a -3 is impossible. You need to bridge the gap now.

Trybe-It Strategy: Not sure if they are ready for a -8? Use your membership to order both a -10 and a -8. Let them hit in the cage. If the -8 slows their hands down too much, send it back and stick with the -10 for one more season.

Common Questions

Why does a heavier bat hit further?
Physics. A heavier object (bat) transfers more energy to the ball upon impact, assuming you can maintain your swing speed.
What if my league allows USSSA bats?
If your league allows USSSA, buy a USSSA bat. They have higher performance limits. Only buy these USA bats if your league Requires the USA Baseball stamp.
