Buyer's Guide: Finding the Right Wood

Fairway woods are versatile. You can use them off the tee (for safety) or off the ground (for distance). Here is how to choose.

1. The 3-Wood (15° Loft)

This is your distance club. It is great for long par-5s or tight tee shots where you need to find the fairway. However, because it has less loft, it can be harder to hit off the ground for beginners.

2. The 5-Wood & 7-Wood (18°-21° Loft)

These are the "Cheat Code" clubs. The extra loft makes it incredibly easy to launch the ball high into the air. If you struggle with topping the ball, switch to a 5-Wood or 7-Wood. They land softer on the green, too.

Trybe It Strategy: Not sure if you can hit a 3-Wood off the deck? Join Alpha Ultra and test one for 30 days. If it stays in the bag, you keep it. If not, swap it for a 5-Wood.

Common Questions

Is a 3-Wood easier than a Driver?
Yes. A 3-Wood has a shorter shaft and more loft (15° vs 10°), which makes it much easier to control. Many smart golfers leave the driver in the bag on narrow holes and tee off with a 3-wood instead.
Fairway Wood vs. Hybrid?
A Fairway Wood has a larger head and is better for sweeping the ball off the grass for maximum distance. A Hybrid has a smaller head and is better for chopping the ball out of the rough.
