Parent's Guide: Youth Catcher Sizing

Buying gear for a growing player is tricky. Youth gear is designed for players roughly Ages 9-12. For players 8 and under, look for "Junior Youth" tags, though standard Youth gear can often be adjusted down.

1. Chest Protector (12" – 14")

This is the most critical measurement. Measure from the base of the neck to the navel. A Youth chest protector is usually 14" long. If your player measures 13" or 14", this is the perfect fit. It must cover the collarbones and ribs completely.

2. Leg Guards (12" – 14")

Measure from the middle of the knee to the ankle bone. Youth leg guards are shorter and narrower than adult guards to allow the player to run and block without tripping over bulky plastic.

The Commotio Cordis Rule: All youth chest protectors MUST be NOCSAE certified (look for the black logo on the chest). This standard ensures the gear protects the heart from impact. All sets we sell meet this requirement.

Common Questions

My son is 12 but tall. Should I get Intermediate?
If he is over 5'4" or has long legs, he might be ready for Intermediate (Ages 12-15) gear. If the Youth leg guards leave his ankles exposed, move up a size.
What comes in a "Box Set"?
A Box Set typically includes the three essentials: a Hockey-Style Helmet, a Chest Protector, and two Leg Guards. Some sets (like Mizuno Samurai) are sold as individual pieces so you can mix sizes if needed.
Which brand is best for Youth?
All-Star (System7 Axis) is widely considered the gold standard for protection. Easton and Mizuno offer incredible value and durability for the travel ball player.
