Buyer's Guide: The Transition Phase

At age 14 (High School), every player must swing a -3 BBCOR bat. This is a massive jump in weight. Watch how to prepare:

1. The Drop -8 (Ages 11-12)

This is the first step up. Once your player dominates with a -10, move them to a -8. The extra mass will increase their hitting distance immediately, provided they can maintain their swing mechanics.

2. The Drop -5 (Age 13)

This is the "Pre-High School" bat. Many 13U tournaments mandate a -5 bat. It is significantly heavier than what they are used to, but it builds the necessary forearm strength for the next level.

Trybe-It Strategy: The jump to -5 is tough. Use your membership to order the -5 early (in the fall season). Let them practice with it over the winter so they are ready for the spring 13U season.

Common Questions

Can I just stay with a -10?
Technically yes, unless your tournament rules forbid it. However, staying with a light bat too long creates "lazy hands." When they eventually face high school pitching with a heavy bat, they will struggle immensely.
Is this a BBCOR bat?
No. These are still USSSA 1.15 BPF bats. They have much more "pop" than a High School BBCOR bat. They are designed to be the bridge between youth performance and adult weight standards.
