Buyer's Guide: Soft vs. Hard Coolers

Choosing the right cooler depends on how far you are traveling and how long you are staying.

1. Soft Coolers (Nylon)

The Day Tripper.
Pros: Lightweight, easy to carry (shoulder straps), and flexible. Perfect for a day on the boat, a picnic, or bringing drinks to the ballfield.
Performance: Typically holds ice for 24 hours in high heat.

2. Hard Coolers (Rotomolded)

The Expedition Rig.
Pros: Indestructible (literally bear-proof in many cases) and superior insulation. Great for camping trips, hunting, or offshore fishing.
Performance: Can hold ice for 3-5+ days if pre-chilled properly.

Air Space is the Enemy: A half-empty cooler melts faster than a full one. If you have extra space, fill it with towels or extra ice packs to reduce the air volume inside.

Common Questions

Are Polar Bear coolers leakproof?
Yes. The Original Nylon series features a TPU double-coated nylon liner that is fully waterproof. You can fill it with loose ice and it won't sweat or leak on your car seat.
How do I clean my cooler?
For soft coolers, use mild soap and water. Rinse thoroughly and prop it open to air dry completely. Never store it with the zipper closed while it's still damp inside.
