Choosing Your Weapon: 33" vs. 34"

A catcher's mitt is the most specialized glove on the field. Unlike fielder's gloves which are measured by length, mitts are measured by circumference. Here is how to choose.

1. The 33.00" (Speed & Framing)

This is the standard size for elite High School and College catchers. It is compact enough to move quickly for blocking and framing borderline pitches, but large enough to handle movement.

2. The 34.00" (Control & Target)

The 34" mitt provides a massive target for your pitcher. It is excellent for handling pitchers with wild movement or a heavy knuckleball. The deeper pocket also helps prevent passed balls, making it a favorite for younger catchers moving up to 12" balls.

Pro Tip: Stiffness is key. A catcher's mitt must be stiff to protect your thumb and prevent the ball from popping out. Do not steam these gloves—break them in naturally to maintain their structural integrity.

Catcher's Mitt FAQs

Do I need a finger hood?
Most modern fastpitch mitts come with a finger hood (or pad) for the index finger. This is crucial for protection if you catch with your index finger out, which we highly recommend to prevent bone bruises.
How long does a mitt take to break in?
A catcher's mitt takes the longest of any glove. Expect 3-4 weeks of heavy work (mallet work and pitch machine receiving) before it is game-ready. Brands like All-Star and Wilson are notoriously stiff out of the box—this is a sign of quality.
Why are Resilient mitts good for catching?
Boutique brands like Resilient often focus on weight distribution. Catching is exhausting; a lighter mitt with high-quality steerhide allows for faster hand speed late in the game compared to heavier, oil-treated commercial mitts.
