The Physics of Control
If you find yourself "popping up" the ball too often or struggling to reset a hard drive, your paddle might be too stiff.
1. The "Pillow Effect" (16mm)
A thicker 16mm Core acts like a shock absorber. When the ball hits the face, it stays there for a fraction of a second longer (Dwell Time). This absorbs the energy of your opponent's slam, allowing you to drop the ball softly into the kitchen.
2. The Sweet Spot
Control paddles typically have a wider shape and a larger sweet spot. This means even if you mishit the ball slightly near the edge, it will still go over the net. They are the most forgiving paddles on the market.
The Reset Rule: If you are constantly hitting the ball into the net, you might need more Power (14mm). If you are constantly popping the ball up too high, you definitely need more Control (16mm).
Common Questions
Do pros use Control paddles?
Yes. Many top pros (like Ben Johns) use 16mm paddles because the game is won at the kitchen line. They can generate their own power, so they prioritize the touch and feel of a thick core.
Are these paddles heavy?
Thicker cores can be slightly heavier, but modern materials keep them in the optimal 7.8oz - 8.2oz range. This extra stability actually helps block fast shots without the paddle twisting in your hand.
Can I still hit hard?
Absolutely. Carbon fiber faces still provide plenty of pop. You just have to swing a little fuller than you would with a 13mm power paddle.
