Buyer's Guide: Choosing the Right Bat
Buying a bat is about three things: League Rules, Length, and Weight. Watch the breakdown:
1. Sizing Chart (Height vs. Bat Length)
| Player Height | Recommended Bat Length |
|---|---|
| 3'9" - 4'0" | 28 inch |
| 4'1" - 4'4" | 29 inch |
| 4'5" - 4'8" | 30 inch |
| 4'9" - 5'0" | 31 inch |
| 5'1" - 5'4" | 32 inch |
| 5'5" + | 33 inch |
2. Know Your League (The Stamp)
- BBCOR (.50): Mandatory for High School (NFHS) and College (NCAA). All BBCOR bats are "Drop 3" (-3).
- USSSA (1.15 BPF): The standard for competitive Travel Ball. These bats have the most "pop." Available in -5, -8, and -10.
- USA Bat: The standard for Little League, Cal Ripken, and Babe Ruth. These bats perform more like wood to ensure safety.
3. What is "Drop Weight"?
The "Drop" is the difference between the Length (inches) and Weight (ounces).
Formula: Length - Drop = Weight.
-10 Drop: A 30" bat weighs 20oz. (Light, for younger kids).
-3 Drop: A 33" bat weighs 30oz. (Heavy, for HS/College).
Warning: Never buy a bat a child can "grow into." If a bat is too heavy, their swing mechanics will break down (dropping the hands), and they will develop bad habits that take years to fix.
Common Questions
Composite vs. Alloy?
Alloy (Metal): Hot out of the wrapper, makes a "ping" sound, more durable in cold weather.
Composite (Carbon Fiber): Bigger sweet spot, less vibration, requires a break-in period (approx 150 hits).
Composite (Carbon Fiber): Bigger sweet spot, less vibration, requires a break-in period (approx 150 hits).
Can I use a USSSA bat in Little League?
NO. It is illegal and the umpire will throw it out of the game. You must use a bat with the USA Baseball stamp.
